Chorale Presents A Night Of Opera In LatrobeLatrobe Chorale will collaborate with local musicians and internationally acclaimed performer, Kerryn O’Donnell, to perform ‘A Night at the Opera’ at the Latrobe Regional Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 29 May. By news@gippsland - 25th May 2004 - Back to News For one night only, the Chorale will break away from religious works in order to perform a variety of choruses from famous operas such as Verdi’s Opera Nabucco and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Gondoliers.
Latrobe Chorale Director, Mary Mirtschin, said that ‘A Night at the Opera’ will be a very different style of performance for the Latrobe Chorale and that all of the members are looking forward to the challenges and new experiences that they encounter on the night.
"We usually perform religious works, and sometimes secular works, however this year we wanted to perform some music that is a bit more popular and that also provides some light entertainment. Religious pieces are usually more serious, however opera is well-known and people are more familiar with it," Ms Mirtschin said.
"There are 40 members of the Latrobe Chorale and for this performance we will be teaming up with 12 local musicians who are extremely talented, and this will add another dimension to the concert."
Ms Mirtschin said that another unique feature of ‘A Night at the Opera’ will be the incorporation of Kerryn O’Donnell, who has just completed a world tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.
"We have been rehearsing once a week since February and Kerryn has fitted in with the Chorale very well during the rehearsals. I think that her presence at the concert will encourage people to come along and enjoy the evening because many Latrobe citizens are familiar with her work," Ms Mirtschin said.
"Performing at the Latrobe Regional Performing Arts Centre will also be a new experience for the Chorale as it is a venue that is very different to the churches and cathedrals in which we usually perform," Ms Mirtschin added.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the Latrobe Chorale has a long history of performing in the Latrobe region and that the Chorale represents some of the most talented singers in the local area.
"Latrobe citizens who have had the pleasure of hearing Latrobe Chorale sing will know that the performances are always beautiful and harmonic and always carried out in a flawless and professional manner. Over the 20 years that the group has been together, the Latrobe Chorale has performed extensively throughout the Latrobe region, and recently demonstrated its talents as part of the Celebration of Roses festivities," Cr White said.
Latrobe Chorale will present ‘A Night at the Opera’ at Latrobe Regional Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 29 May at 8pm. Tickets cost $17 adults, $15 concession/students, $10 children 15 years and under, $50 family (two adults and two children). To book tickets contact Latrobe City’s Box Office telephone, 5176 3559 or Select Music Systems telephone, 5174 2849.
