Vandalism More Frequent In Bass Coast ShireVandalism is becoming more frequent in Bass Coast Shire, with Cowes and San Remo being the worst hit areas. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th May 2007 - Back to News While graffiti is the most common type of vandalism, other damage such as setting fire to toilet cubicles, ripping doors off hinges and general damage to walls and fittings are also common.
The Finlay Street and Thompson Ave toilet blocks in Cowes were vandalised on Tuesday May 8. The blocks suffered heavy graffiti with black paint and texter. The attack occurred before 8pm.
In addition, only two weeks ago the toilet block cubicles at Grayden Reserve, Newhaven were set on fire, and another two toilet blocks at Newhaven had doors ripped off their hinges.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Maintenance Manager, Fred Huitema said the common belief was that most of these attacks happen during the tourist season and that visitors are to blame.
"The unfortunate reality is that majority of these incidence occur mid week, in the off season and that locals have been caught by the police in the past.
"The cost to Council and the community for clean up and repairs this financial year is around $32,000," he stated.
Council will paint the whole inside of the toilet block at Finlay Street and parts of Thompson Ave starting 15 May 2007. In this instance, it is estimated to cost Council and the community at least $2,000.
