Ten Year Vision For Churchill RevealedA ten year vision for the future of Churchill has been unveiled with Latrobe City Council approving the Churchill Town Centre Plan at Monday night’s council meeting. By Latrobe City Council - 18th July 2007 - Back to News Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley said that the plan, in conjunction with the Churchill Structure Plan and, in consultation with local key stakeholders, promoted a long-term view of a more cohesive and attractive town centre for residents, businesses and users of the university campus.
"The Churchill Town Centre Plan pays particular attention to creating an east-west link between the existing Churchill residential areas, commercial area and the Monash University campus, as well as consolidating the retail, commercial and entertainment uses in the existing commercial precinct," Mr Buckley explained.
"Whilst considering the plan we were aware of the need to promote the unique characteristics of Churchill but also of the need to improve the linkages between the different elements of the town centre.
"The plan envisions strengthening the road networks, bicycle paths and pedestrian access in all areas of the town centre and using the principles of good, clear urban planning aims to create a connected and vibrant town for the whole community," Mr Buckley explained.
Mr Buckley said that consultation with the local community supported by good urban planning advice had been the key to developing the Churchill Town Centre Plan.
"Following a well-attended community meeting in February this year, key stakeholders were invited to attend two workshops in order to explore some realistic options for Churchill’s town centre. The stakeholders played an integral part in creating this plan.
"Whilst it was pleasing that so many stakeholders were eager to be involved in the planning process, it is just as vital that the stakeholders continue to work closely with council to ensure the ongoing success and implementation of this plan," Mr Buckley said.
Council has committed $250 000 through capital works budget and is in the process of seeking funding from other Government sources.
