New National Vietnam Veterans Museum To Be Launched

Premier Steve Bracks will launch the new National Vietnam Veterans Museum in Phillip Island on Friday March 9.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 2nd March 2007 - Back to News

The Museum is set to be a major addition to the already famous tourist destination.

According to Museum spokesman, Gary Parker, the Museum will also be a destination in its own right.

"Over 1,000 Vietnam Veterans from across Australia as well as Australian-Vietnamese community members will help us launch the Museum," said Mr Parker.

"It will also be the opening of an exciting new hologram-type exhibit, the first of its kind in Victoria.

"We are delighted that Mr Bracks has agreed to open the facility," added Mr Parker.

"The State Government has been the major contributor, with a grant of $250,000.

"Bass Coast Shire Council’s involvement has also been central to the successful completion of this project.

"Federal funding has also been significant through the Departments of Transport and Regional Development and the Department of Veteran's Affairs," he said.

The new Museum has been constructed on land owned by the Vietnam Veterans Community. The building, land and contents will be deeded back to the Australian community.

"We have developed the Museum to be self sustaining so that it can be appropriately maintained and not be a burden on the Australian public," Mr Parker continued.

"It is a place of education with the facilities for genuine research into all aspects of Australia's longest war."

The launch on March 9 will be accompanied by a concert including performers Wilbur Wilde, Mae Parker, Wendy Stapleton, Marcie Jones, Mike Brady and local rock band Shazam. The concert will be open to the public. For more information phone (03) 5956 6400 or visit www.vietnamvetsmuseum.org
