According the figures released as part of the State of the Regions report, Bass Coast Shire has the most sustainable population in Gippsland. Bass Coast rates as the 109th most sustainable region in the nation, from a total ranking of 632.

The Report looked at every region in Australia and reported on the sustainability of the population in each area. This sustainability is measured across ten factors including fertility, migration, share of population under 55, dominant locations and consistency of population growth. This year’s report particularly focused on the correlation between internet use and prosperity.

The Report was presented by Dr Peter Brain and Dr Craig Shepherd from the National Institute of Economics and Industry Research, as part of a regional cooperation and development forum.

Dr Brain and Dr Shepherd explained that the figures from the Report showed a direct correlation between internet use and prosperity and showed that access to an effective and efficient telecommunications infrastructure is one of the key determinants of regional prosperity.

They also stated that Australia was falling behind the rest of the Western world in terms of telecommunications and internet infrastructure, which has a enormous economic impact on the nation.

Representing Bass Coast at The National General Assembly of Local Government was the Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council and the Acting Chief Executive Officer Danny Luna. The Assembly is the annual congress of 632 Councils across Australia.
