Traralgon To Host Women’s National Basketball League GameLatrobe City’s Traralgon Sports Stadium will host the national women’s basketball game between the Bendigo Spirit and the Dandenong Rangers on Sunday 2 December 2007, with tip-off at 1pm. By Latrobe City - 23rd November 2007 - Back to News Latrobe’s leisure facilities coordinator Georgina Mitchell said that this was the first ever national basketball competition to be played for championship points in Gippsland.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to witness elite athletes playing on their doorstep. The court the game is being played on has a 1000 seat capacity with great views of the action from any seat. This match will be counted as a home game for Bendigo Spirit who are in their inaugural season in the WNBL.
Ms Mitchell added that the WNBL is one of the best women’s leagues in the world and is sponsored by the Austrailan Defence Force.
"This league has been the breeding ground for the Australian National team - the Opals - that won gold at the 2006 FIFA World Championships held in Brazil. Players such as Lauren Jackson, who is widely regarded as the best player in the world, and Penny Taylor, who recently won a WNBA title with Phoenix Mercury, came through the WNBL system and were playing in the league as recently as 2004," Ms Mitchell explained.
There are a number of Gippsland-born players on the teams: Jenna O’Hea will be playing for Bendigo Spirit and was born in Traralgon; Andrea Wilson will be playing for Bendigo Spirit and was a product of the Leongatha Basketball Association and Claire Fitzgerald, a squad member of the Dandenong Rangers, was born in Wonthaggi and played junior basketball in the Korumburra Basketball Association.
Emily McInerny for Dandenong Rangers was a member of the Opals national team that won gold at the 2006 FIFA World Basketball Championships and Michelle Brogan, also of Dandenong, was a member of the Opals team that won bronze at the Atlanta Olympics and silver at the Sydney Olympics.
"The atmosphere at these events is always fantastic. The ADF provide entertainment for the crowd before, during and after the match with military displays, interviews, merchandise throw-outs, spot prizes and games such as tug of war or relay races. It’s an affordable and fun family day out," Ms Mitchell said.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Tony Zimora said since the Traralgon Sports Stadium was upgraded to host matches as part of the Commonwealth Games, the facilities are now an attractive choice for those wanting to host events outside Melbourne.
"As a result of that upgrade, the excellent facilities at Traralgon have afforded us here in Latrobe City one of the better-equipped multi-purpose stadiums in regional Victoria. As Bendigo is representing country Victoria in the WNBL, they have indicated that they would like to set up longer term relationships with us and other regional centres, to host matches in the future.
"We would encourage the community to book their tickets to this exciting, top level sports event and ensure that the players receive a great country welcome. It is no longer necessary to travel to the city to watch elite sporting encounters, when we have the facilities on our very own doorstep," Cr Zimora concluded.
Tickets are on sale through Latrobe City’s box office and can be obtained by calling 5176 3559 or e-mailing boxoffice@latrobe.vic.gov.au.
Prices: Adults: $12, Children 10-15: $7, Children under 10 are admitted free, Family (2 adults and 3 children) $40.
