Latrobe City declared Victoria’s first City Deal priority

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan has joined with State Small Business, Innovation and Trade Minister, Philip Dalidakis, today in Morwell to welcome the Victorian government’s call to seal the first Victorian City Deal

During today’s visit, Mr Dalidakis urged the Federal Government to partner with the State Government, Latrobe City Council and the Latrobe Valley Authority to help grow jobs in the Valley through the Federal Government program.

Cr O’Callaghan said Council welcomed the State Government’s call for Latrobe City to be the first Victorian region to seek funding under ‘City Deals’.

"City Deals would formalise the partnership across the three levels of government and define priorities, actions, timeframes and accountabilities for achieving joint goals with and for our community," she said.

"A City Deal has the potential to transform Latrobe City, to grow its economy and improve the lives of our community through better transport, access to jobs and enhancing liveability," Councillor O’Callaghan said.

"We are in no doubt that a City Deal for Latrobe City – hopefully, Victoria’s first City Deal – will be an exciting test of our ability to leverage from our strengths, build momentum, establish a clear and consistent approach as well as harness the remarkable talents of our extraordinary community.

"There are considerable challenges that lie ahead. However, we fundamentally believe that through a partnership between community, business and industry, as well as State, Federal and Local Government, extraordinary results can be achieved.

"This program will build on the work we have done in the past year with our community, which led to the development of 'A Strength Led Transition', a document which outlines our future vision for Latrobe City.

"Council will be seeking support from the State Government to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to enable Latrobe City to commence the City Deals preparation process. We believe Latrobe City is strongly positioned for a City Deals from the Commonwealth when the funding applications process opens early next year.

"Latrobe City is actively transitioning from a reliance on brown coal at the centre of its economic, social and environmental profile. The Latrobe Valley community is conscious of the growing focus and momentum to pursue opportunities capable of delivering prosperity, stability and surety for the future.

"Policy changes at the federal, and indeed global, level regarding coal-fuelled energy generation have led to a pressing need for reinvention. A City Deal would improve collaboration across all levels of government – a quality needed during a time of change and adversity. With jobs, growth and liveability at its core, Latrobe Valley is an obvious City Deals candidate.

"Council is particularly pleased that the City Deals secured to date with Townsville, Western Sydney and Launceston have had a strong focus on community led and community generated initiatives," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
