Japanese Day Packed With Culture And EntertainmentThe fifth Latrobe City Japanese Day will be held at Kernot Hall on Sunday 19 October 2008 from 10.30am to 3.30pm, and once again the whole community will be invited to take part in the celebrations. By Latrobe City - 10th October 2008 - Back to News Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that this important community event always attracts a large crowd who are fascinated by the traditions and culture from Japan.
"Our strong links to our sister city in Takasago with many inter-city visits means that community awareness around the Japanese lifestyle is increasing, and events such as this only add to that interest.
The martial arts will again come to the fore again at this year’s fun-filled day, with Japanese karate demonstrations by the Traralgon Kyokushin Karate Club, and judo being presented by the Traralgon Judo Club.
Latrobe City’s coordinator events and international relations, Danny McDonald, said once again audiences are likely to be thrilled by the Japanese drumming performances by the Melbourne based group Wadaiko Rindo.
"Their performances are spectacular visual displays of stamina, strength and humour, with the vibrations produced on stage energising the whole audience," he said.
"Many people also find the opportunity to sample Japanese cuisine, such as sushi and okonomiyaki an irresistible attraction at Japanese Day and they won’t be disappointed this year. There will also be many stalls and workshops featuring Japanese art and craft, intrinsic to the Japanese lifestyle for everyone to enjoy.
"Other stalls will offer a variety of Japanese products that people can purchase on the day. There will be Japanese lollies and snacks and a host of intriguing and unusual products and gifts," Mr McDonald said.
"Children are certainly not forgotten, because there will be plenty of activities, games and competitions, such as the sumo suits, a jumping castle to enjoy, Japanese toys and art activities that will appeal to the younger mind," Mr McDonald added.
Japanese Day is sponsored by Latrobe City Council, TEPCO, and Loy Yang Power. Further information is available from Danny McDonald, telephone 1300 367 700.
