Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the program will include presentation of the Australia Day awards for Citizen, Young Citizen, Community Event of the Year and Community Service of the Year.

"Each year council receives some great nominations aimed at recognising excellence demonstrated by individuals and groups in leadership and community service.

"This year is no different and the very worthy winners will be recognised publicly on Australia Day and thanked on behalf of council and the community for their dedication and commitment."

Cr Price said another important aspect of the Australia Day function at Kernot Hall will be the welcoming ceremony for new Australian citizens – a welcome which is mirrored across the nation.

"Twelve residents will become Australian citizens on the day here in Latrobe. Those becoming citizens this year come from a number of different backgrounds, from China, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Africa and the United Kingdom," Cr Price said.

"The naturalization ceremony is a very moving and significant occasion for everyone involved. There is so much joy and pride expressed by citizenship recipients, their families and in fact the whole community in attendance," Cr Price said.

The Australia Day awards and naturalization ceremonies at Kernot Hall will also be enhanced by music provided by the Latrobe City Youth Band and a performance by the Coal Valley Male Chorus.

Cr Price said Australia Day Ambassadors Dr Alessandro Demaio, health promoter and 2008 Australian of the Year Awards finalist, and Bill Horman APM, State President of Neighbourhood Watch, will be special guest speakers on the day; providing a unique opportunity for the community to meet two inspirational Australian achievers.

Ambassadors are recruited from diverse fields such as the arts, sport, science, business, government and entertainment. They can be of any age, but they all share the common traits of achievement through hard work, talent, and a strong sense of patriotism. All act in an honorary capacity, giving freely of their time to help celebrate our National Day.

The Australia Day Ambassadors will also address Australia Day celebrations earlier in the day. Dr Alessandro Demaio will address those attending Australia Day activities at Victory Park in Traralgon; and Mr Bill Horman will address those attending activities at Gippsland Heritage Park in Moe.

Cr Price said a host of Australia Day celebrations are taking place right across Latrobe in major towns and many smaller communities. "Numerous communities are celebrating Australia Day in their own special way. I encourage everyone to attend one or more of these functions and enjoy the spirit that pervades on this very special national day," Cr Price added.
