Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that Belong to Country – Loongwurk reflects deep cultural links to country, family and community for local artist Eileen Harrison.

"Elements of traditional design, totems, myths and legends of the Kurnai people, including stories of the Den of Nargun, are depicted through the use of intricate lines and vivid colours," Ms Tegart explained.

"Born on the church mission at Lake Tyers, Gippsland in 1948, Ms Harrison has overcome many barriers including racism, dispossession and deafness. In 1996 Harrison had a bionic ear implant which introduced her to a new and exciting world that allowed her the confidence to achieve her artistic goals.

"Ms Harrison completed a Certificate 4 in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art & Design at Central Gippsland TAFE winning the 2002 training award and was recently named the 2004 Gippsland NAIDOC Artist of the Year," Ms Tegart said.

Ms Tegart added that during this time Ms Harrison’s career had developed through commissioned murals and paintings for many institutions, councils and festivals in Gippsland. "She has participated in various exhibitions and is represented in several private collections," Ms Tegart said.

"The exhibition Belong to Country – Loongwurk is to be officially opened by Michael Henson, Chair of Creative Gippsland on Thursday 20 January at 5.30pm," Ms Tegart concluded.

The exhibition continues until Sunday 13 February 2005.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Admission is free.
