Local arts groups profit from business arts workshop

A two-day arts workshop held at the Moe Town Hall last Wednesday and Thursday as part of Latrobe City’s Business Arts Forum, provided local arts groups with a valuable insight into forming strategic relationships with business for mutual benefit.

Latrobe City’s Arts Innovation Facilitator, Lynette Raven, said artists and arts groups attending the workshop were rewarded with stimulating information and role-play sessions that identified how arts and business could benefit from each other, and the key preparations and strategies to be followed when making approaches to business.

"Mr Hugo Leschen, Australian Business Art Foundation’s (AbaF) National Cultural Liaison Manager, facilitated all sessions, and feedback from those attending the sessions was fantastic. Arts participants stated they had clearly learned about the importance of carefully formulating their approaches to business," Ms Raven said.

"Participants learned strategies for making presentations to business, which covered key areas such as research, and communicating with clarity so that any misunderstandings are avoided. Ways of wording proposals and appropriate body language were highlighted, together with discussions on the recognition of protocols or customs that might influence a decision.

"There was a strong emphasis on doing the homework before making approaches; not just in analysing exactly what is being proposed by the arts group and what can be provided in return, but in understanding the goals of the business being approached. It’s important to understand who they are marketing to and what they are likely to want to achieve from any arrangement," Ms Raven said.

Participants learned the importance of approaching appropriate business partners to help ensure they achieved a ‘Perfect Match’.

Six business scenarios were created and participants had to choose one or more businesses that were considered appropriate to approach on the basis of what their own arts organisation had to offer. "Role-playing then determined whether the lessons taught had been understood," Ms Raven explained.

"These partnerships really are two-way arrangements, and as the role-playing revealed, there have to be benefits for both parties in any proposal," Ms Raven added.

Commenting on the program Mr Leschen stated that partnerships between local businesses, artists and arts organisations can deliver measurable and valuable bottom-line benefits for everyone involved.

A number of high profile local businesses also attended an evening Business Briefing on the Wednesday and expressed interest in their continuing involvement in the program.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said Latrobe City Council has invested in the Business Art Forum program, an initiative of AbaF, to provide additional opportunities for local arts groups and businesses.

"We are also looking forward to the ‘Business Exchange’ in early 2004 which will facilitate matching participants in the Arts Workshops with participants in the Business Briefing. Latrobe City’s Arts Unit is also currently looking at ways to include other artists and art organisations with business in the ongoing program of events," Cr Middlemiss said.

Successful business-arts partnerships will be showcased at the Latrobe Innovation Festival in May 2004
