East Gippsland Shire Council contractors Tambo Waste have reported a record total of 316.4 tonnes of recyclables collected during January from the kerbside collection system.

The recyclables where collected from the 25,745 recycling bins placed out for collection over the month.

This tonnage equates to 12.3 kg for each bin, which is an amazing statistic considering the industry standard is considered to be around the 7 to 9 kg per collection.

According to the Shire the results highlight the success of the Council's kerbside recycling program that annually processes around 3000 tonnes each year.

However it has identified a contamination problem in Orbost where food scraps, green waste, paints, needles, clothing, machinery parts being put into the recycling bins and ruining items that can be separated and recycled.

The Shire says that Tambo Waste will recommence bin inspections in the area in order to eliminate the problem and that people who are unsure what can be placed in the recycling bin could contact Tambo Waste or Shire Waste management staff.
