The Nationals criticise deteriorating Princes Highway as potholes raise safety concerns in Traralgon EastThe Nationals have criticised the deteriorating Princes Highway at Traralgon East, citing 85 potholes between Traralgon and Rosedale and road damage less than 18 months after duplication. By news@gippsland - 20th August 2026 - Back to News The deteriorating condition of the Princes Highway at Traralgon East has drawn fierce criticism from The Nationals and Latrobe Valley motorists, with sections of the road disintegrating less than 18 months after completion.
The worsening condition of the Princes Highway at Traralgon East has sparked community concern, with residents warning that dangerous potholes can no longer be ignored. In, picture: Martin Cameron and Melina Bath Highway potholes escalateMember for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said her office had received a steady stream of complaints from frustrated residents concerned with the Princes Highway's rapid decline. "The highway at Traralgon East is yet another example of Labor's failure to properly build and maintain regional roads." "So frustrated by the sheer number of potholes between Traralgon and Rosedale one resident counted them, recording a staggering 85 potholes. Princes Highway potholes are rampant right throughout Gippsland, they are causing blown tyres, damaged rims and present a road safety hazard for motorists," she said. Regional roads crumblingMember for Morwell Martin Cameron said Latrobe Valley residents were fed up with crumbling regional roads under the Labor government. "The highway duplication was completed less than 18 months ago, yet many parts are already in ruin. Motorists must be constantly alert to avoid the sheer volume of dangerous potholes." "After more than a decade in government, Labor blames everyone except itself for the appalling condition of our roads. The Nationals are committed to eliminating one million potholes with a $5 billion investment to properly repair and rebuild our roads. Labor's low construction standards, patchwork repairs and inadequate drainage maintenance are all contributing to the rapid deterioration of our regional roads." "That's why The Nationals have committed to a Fair Share Guarantee, ensuring that 25 per cent of all infrastructure spending is invested in regional Victoria so country communities receive the infrastructure they deserve. Every Victorian deserves roads that are safe, durable and fit for purpose, so they can travel with confidence and return home safely, regardless of their postcode," said Mr Cameron.
