Upgrades to the Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park (GSEP) were celebrated today, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of the Morwell venue into one of regional Victoria’s leading sports and events facilities.

The redevelopment honours local football history and Gunaikurnai culture, with the venue hosting the Football Victoria Country Championships in July 2027

Major sporting facility upgrade

Supported by more than $45 million from the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, the project is delivering substantial new sporting infrastructure, community facilities and event spaces, with works continuing across parts of the precinct. The redevelopment includes five playing surfaces, a new Don Di Fabrizio Pavilion, about 1200 spectator seats, improved accessibility, additional parking and upgraded public spaces across the park.

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said the project was a significant investment in the future of sport and community life in Latrobe City. "This is a fantastic result for our community and a facility we can all be proud of. Today is about celebrating how far this project has come, and recognising the benefits these upgrades will bring to our community."

"GSEP is now much more than a sporting venue. It is a place where people can come together for sport, community events, functions and entertainment. The new facilities will support local clubs while also creating opportunities to attract major events to our region and bring more visitors to Morwell," Cr Gibson said.

Modern pavilion facilities

At the centre of the redevelopment is the new Don Di Fabrizio Pavilion, which includes modern change rooms, officials’ facilities, a strength and conditioning gym, administration areas, broadcast facilities, storage, public amenities and a function space that can accommodate up to 200 people. The project also includes a dedicated change pavilion that allows multiple sports and events to be supported across the precinct at the same time.

Cr Gibson said the redevelopment would help keep the venue active throughout the year. "These facilities will give us the ability to host a wider range of sporting competitions and community activities than ever before. Importantly, this investment supports local participation in sport while also helping attract visitors, creating opportunities for local businesses and strengthening the region’s reputation as a destination for major events," Cr Gibson said.

Celebrating heritage and culture

The redevelopment also celebrates the history and identity of the site through the continued recognition of the Don Di Fabrizio name and features that acknowledge local football history. Cultural artwork and design elements recognising Gunaikurnai culture and connection to Country have also been incorporated into the park.

The venue has already been locked in for the Football Victoria Country Championships in July 2027, helping showcase the facility’s ability to host large-participation competitions. Works are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
