By news@gippsland - 28th September 2026 - Back to News A significant milestone was celebrated today, marking the start of construction on a new contemporary $30 million Library and Learning Centre in Warragul. Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Kate Wilson was joined by Harriet Shing MP from the Victorian Government alongside community and project partners to formally break ground at the project site in Warragul earlier today.

Cr Wilson spoke at the event praising the collaboration between all three levels of government, Myli and the community to deliver for our growing region. "This building will be much more than just a library. It’s a place where everyone is welcome and residents from every generation can come and connect. This will be a beautiful, safe space for everyone to participate in community life." "We’re proud to be delivering a state-of-the-art facility that is fully accessible and well connected to the rest of the town. A place where everyone can access information, digital tools, and literacy and skill building programs that will create connections and strengthen our growing community for decades to come," she said. Government funding acknowledgedAcknowledgements were made to Senator the Hon Jess Walsh from the Australian Government for their $14.5 million contribution through the Growing Regions Program, as well as Harriet Shing MP from the Victorian Government for their $4.5 million combined investment. "I thank both the Australian and Victorian Government for their continued support and investment in our community. The vital funding is the reason we stand here today and start a new and exciting chapter for our Shire." "Another thanks goes to Daniel Lewis and the team at Myli for their ongoing support throughout the planning and advocacy for this project. Our community deserves a library that they can be proud of and together we are a step closer to turning that vision to a reality." the mayor added. Warragul library progressRepresenting the Australian Government, Senator the Honourable Jess Walsh who was unable to attend, shared a few words on the project. "The Albanese Labor Government is committed to investing in regional Australia, and the Growing Regions Program is a key part of that commitment. This new library and learning centre in Warragul will be a wonderful facility for the local community to enjoy", said Senator Walsh. Harriet Shing MP spoke at the event recognising the vital contributions from Myli, the Project Reference Group, designers, planners and Council staff. "Design of facilities like this is at its best when there is collaboration. Projects like this are also not just about the end product, but what we do along the way. There will be about a dozen local jobs created from this project which supports local job opportunities and economic growth and development," said Ms Shing. Early site preparation works are continuing ahead of the building's main construction which is set to commence towards the end of this year. The facility is marked for opening in early 2028. Local residents and the broader community will be kept informed as the project progresses, including where construction works may result in temporary changes to access, traffic or other conditions around the area.
