Foster CFA volunteers await new station funding despite site and lease arrangements already being in place

Foster CFA volunteers continue waiting for a new station, with a site and long-term lease secured. Danny O’Brien is calling for government funding to begin construction.

Foster CFA volunteers are still waiting for a new fire station despite a site being identified and a long-term lease arrangement already being in place for construction. The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien said the delay was incredibly frustrating. "The Foster brigade has shown remarkable patience while continuing to operate from an old and increasingly unsuitable station," Mr O’Brien said.

Mr O’Brien said, "Captain David Jones and his team should not have to keep waiting for a station that meets the minimum needs of a modern fire brigade. Newer fire trucks simply will not fit inside the station, meaning the brigade cannot take advantage of upgraded appliances."

"There is also a basic safety issue for volunteers. The station is so cramped that it is not safe for volunteers to get changed for a job while trucks are moving in and out. That is not good enough for the people who put their own time and safety on the line to protect our community," he said.

Mr O’Brien said the project had already progressed to the point where the Carroll Labor Government should be able to provide funding and get construction underway. "We have a site identified and a long-term lease arrangement in place. I have been working with the Foster community on this project for at least a decade and there has been plenty of time to get the groundwork done."

"Foster CFA volunteers should not have to keep waiting when we know exactly where the new station can go and what is needed to get the project moving. CFA volunteers are an essential part of our emergency response. They train, prepare and respond to fires and other emergencies in our communities, often giving up time with their families, farms and workplaces."

"They deserve facilities that are safe, modern and fit for purpose. I am calling on the Carroll Labor Government to step up and finally fund the Foster fire station and give this brigade the certainty it deserves," said Mr O’Brien.
