Gippsland Water has started construction on its Traralgon Tyers Interconnect project, securing future water supply for customers in Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr, and Rosedale. The 4.5-kilometre pipeline will connect the towns to the Traralgon water supply network, creating more reliability and efficiency.

Water network strengthened

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the project would help strengthen the system for the future. "Not only does this project ensure a more reliable water supply for the towns of Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr, and Rosedale, but it will also cater for future growth of the region. The towns will be connected to the Traralgon water treatment plant, which will also improve system resilience to extreme weather events due to the plant’s enhanced technology and capabilities.

"Each is currently supplied by the Tyers water treatment plant which can be severely impacted by these events and not meet the demand or quality needed. The project will also contribute to network efficiency, a reduction in long-term costs, and help us keep downward pressure on bills," Ms Cumming said.

This multi-million-dollar project is jointly funded by the Australian Government, through the National Water Grid Fund, the Victorian Government and delivered in partnership with Gippsland Water. "This funding boost helps deliver the major project without our customers footing the entire bill," Ms Cumming said.

Pipeline works underway

The pipeline will be installed from Dranes Road, Traralgon, in road reserves and Crown land along Traralgon-Maffra Road to Black Tank Road, Glengarry. A reticulation main will also be installed along a small section of Glengarry West Road, which will ensure customers in elevated areas maintain current water pressures.

The works will impact road users along the pipe alignment. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and follow traffic controls in the area. For more information on Gippsland Water’s major projects, visit Gippsland Water website.
