East Gippsland Shire Council is encouraging residents to prepare their properties for the upcoming bushfire season, with free green waste disposal available throughout November. From Sunday 1 November to Monday 30 November 2026, residential property owners can dispose of eligible garden waste free of charge at Bairnsdale Landfill and participating transfer stations, helping to reduce potential fire hazards around homes and properties.

Residents can dispose of up to four cubic metres of eligible garden waste free daily throughout November at Bairnsdale Landfill and participating transfer stations. Exclusions apply

Free green waste disposal

Council is encouraging residents to take advantage of the offer and get their properties ready before summer. Garden organics, including branches, leaves, grass and general weeds are eligible. Garden tools, soil, rocks and gravel, treated timber and declared noxious weeds are not accepted. A limit of four cubic metres per customer per day applies.

Residents are also urged to check for unwanted gas bottles and arrange for their safe disposal. Empty 4kg and 9kg LPG bottles should be taken to an authorised exchange or return point, participating service stations, or designated landfills and transfer stations. Gas bottles can also be disposed of for a fee at Bairnsdale Landfill and participating transfer stations. They must never be disposed of as general rubbish.

In addition to free green waste disposal in November, ratepayers can save on disposal fees by keeping green waste separate from general rubbish when bringing a trailer load to the transfer station. For more on preparing for the bushfire season, and for information about participating transfer stations, opening hours and accepted materials, visit Council’s website.
