Bairnsdale Library unveils upgraded outdoor spaces with new shade structures, refreshed courtyard and improved facilities for community activities

The Bairnsdale Library now has two louvred shade structures and refreshed outdoor spaces where the community can gather, learn and relax. Funded through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, the Open Skies Project has transformed the front and rear of the library through the $79,104 contribution. The two louvred shade structures, one at the front entrance and one in the rear courtyard, can provide shade, opened for natural light and airflow, or closed in wet weather to keep the space dry.

The rear courtyard has also been revitalised, with new artificial turf, refreshed bench seating, upgraded screening, new garden beds and two raised vegetable beds. It's a ready-made spot for story time, children's activities and community programs, and the vegetable beds open opportunities for gardening activities and learning new skills.

Upgraded library spaces

Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said the project showed what can be achieved when funding, local skills and community needs come together. "Our libraries are so much more than places to borrow books. They're where children discover stories and people of all ages come to learn and connect. From story time in the courtyard to a quiet read in the shade, these spaces give our community even more ways to enjoy the library. I can't wait to see people make the most of them."

"It's also fantastic to see local businesses at the heart of the project. I'd like to thank Shadeworks for delivering the louvred shade structures, Pearce Cameron Indigenous Projects for the landscaping works, and Yeates Electrical for their contribution. Their quality workmanship has created something the community will enjoy for years to come," Cr Ashworth said.

The upgraded areas are open now, with a few minor works still to come at the front library play space in the coming months and we thank the community for their patience during construction. The project reflects Council's commitment to creating welcoming spaces for learning, recreation and connection.
