Community groups to manage Public Internet Access Corners

Three computers purchased by South Gippsland Shire Council two years ago through a $40,000 Vic Net funding grant have now been officially handed over to non profit community groups to manage Public Internet Access Corners within their communities.

The Internet Corners Project was funded by the Victorian Government as part of the Connecting Victoria Strategy. The key objective of the $1.3 million program is to increase the level of public access to the Internet.

Mirboo North Community Support Co-operative has taken responsibility for the computer which is now operational at the Mirboo North Rural Transaction Centre.

The Toora and District Community Progress Association and the South Gippsland Community Internet Access Inc are currently finalising sites for their computers.

"Council would like to express its thanks to these community groups for generously undertaking to manage these community facilities," said the Mayor, Cr Heather Bligh. "It is exciting to see more opportunities for the general public to tap into technology which has become standard practice in the business world and is here to stay. It’s also a great way for people to communicate with family and friends and research issues. It’s like a giant library on your doorstep!"

For those who are unfamiliar with computer operations, a number of neighbourhood houses and Education Centre Gippsland (ECG) conduct beginner training courses throughout the year. Their semester programs will appear in your letter box from time to time outlining the various courses available.
