Latrobe Housing Summit explores collaborative solutions to meet growing regional housing demand and support future economic developmentLatrobe City Council’s Housing Summit brought together government, industry and community leaders to address rising housing demand, improve affordability and develop solutions supporting regional growth, investment and population increases. By news@gippsland - 28th October 2026 - Back to News Latrobe City Council brought together government representatives, housing experts, community organisations and industry leaders at the Latrobe Housing Summit to explore collaborative housing and accommodation solutions to support the region's growth and transformation. Held on Friday 9 October 2026, the summit focused on building a shared understanding of how Latrobe City's growth is increasing demand for housing and how organisations can work together to address the associated challenges.
The Latrobe Housing Summit is presented by Matthew Nichol, Director at Remplan Latrobe housing demand risesThe event was timely as Latrobe City experiences significant economic and industry change, with major renewable energy projects, ongoing investment, population growth and economic diversification creating significant opportunities for the region, along with increased demand for housing and accommodation. Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said the summit was an important forum that brought together key stakeholders together to explore ideas to help ensure housing supply keeps up with the region's future opportunities. "There's a lot happening in Latrobe City right now, with new investment, new projects and more people coming to the region for work." "That's great news for our local economy, but it also means we need to make sure there's enough housing for the people who want to live and work here, especially key workers and those staying in the region temporarily. Bringing people together to talk about these challenges is an important first step. We need industry, government and the community working together to find practical solutions for Latrobe City," Cr Gibson said. Planning Latrobe’s housing futureDiscussions at the summit explored current housing trends, population growth, approved development activity and the impacts of economic transformation occurring across Latrobe City. Cr Gibson said addressing housing availability remained a key priority for Council and was central to its advocacy efforts. "Having the right mix of affordable housing is so important. It helps us attract and keep workers, supports local businesses and makes sure our community can access the services it needs," she said. "Creating more housing choices is an important part of our Council Plan. It's about making sure Latrobe City remains a great place to live and work as our community grows. We'll keep working with the Victorian Government and our community partners to open up more land for housing and give current and future residents more choice," she said. The Housing Summit supports Council's 2025–2029 Council Plan commitment to improve housing and liveability by increasing land available for residential growth and working towards the Victorian Government's Housing Targets. The outcomes and insights gained through the summit will help identify future opportunities for collaboration and inform Council's ongoing advocacy and discussions with government, industry and community partners as the region plans for continued growth and investment.
