Chris Larsen, a young person who has previously volunteered with the program, introduced the program to participants, explaining that the students will meet once a month for workshop sessions covering every aspect of leadership.

Topics to be covered in the program include communication skills, time management, public speaking, personal development and event management.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed explained that there are 18 participants in the leadership program selected via a stringent application process, from six schools within the municipality.

"These young people, as potential leaders in our community, will be encountering valuable life experiences through the program, that will equip them with the confidence to deal with numerous challenges in their future careers and home life," Cr Lougheed said.

Councillor Sheridan Bond said that there would also be the opportunity for the participants to hear presentations from guest presenters and from other young people who have gone on to become leaders in their fields.

"Many previous participants of this program have already emerged as leaders in the community, and passing on their experiences to the next generation of youth can be inspiring," Cr Bond said.

Latrobe City’s Youth Development Officer, Tanya Harrington, said that the first workshop conducted through the leadership program will include each of the participants completing the Myer Briggs personality test which helps participants to get to know one another better. "The group will also design its own logo and come up with a name for the new leadership program," Ms Harrington said.

"These young people are about to embark on a program that will shape their lives, giving them the knowledge to deal with life’s challenges and achieve their goals," Ms Harrington added.

During the launch, Councillors Lougheed and Bond presented the participants with their new uniforms and information packs.
