latrobe’s volunteers thanked with celebratory lunchLatrobe City’s volunteers came together last Friday to celebrate another successful year for volunteer programs region wide, and to join in the festive season spirit with a thank you lunch. By Latrobe City Council - 12th December 2006 - Back to News 180 volunteers including participants with Meals on Wheels, We Care, Planned Activity Group and the Walking School Bus programs took part in the annual event which this year was held at the Italian Australian Club in Morwell.
Latrobe City councillor Lisa Price congratulated all volunteers on their contribution and their dedication to the community.
"Latrobe City volunteers should be proud of their achievements. Our Meals on Wheels volunteers have delivered up to 900 meals a week, as well as countless smiles and invaluable caring words throughout Morwell, Traralgon and the outlying areas," Cr Price said
"Our Planned Activity Group volunteers have provided up to 1000 hours of volunteering a month throughout 2006, assisting with meal preparation, activities and transport in the centres in Traralgon and Yallourn North.
"We Care volunteers in Traralgon, Morwell and Moe have visited our frail aged citizens in their homes, providing conversation, friendship and assistance with shopping trips and other outings. Last year, We Care volunteers contributed 2,500 hours of their valuable time to the program.
"Our dedicated band of Walking School Bus volunteers throughout Latrobe City schools has actively participated in escorting children to and from school throughout the year. Not only giving peace of mind to parents, but also encouraging a healthy lifestyle for our children," Cr Lisa Price said
At this year’s celebration, some long-serving volunteers were also recognised for their achievements and presented with gifts.
Betty Dunford, Christine Antonopoulous, Carol Dalton, Doris Roberts, Helen Ruff, Sam Johnson, Morris Johnson, Barbara Johnson, and Maurie Johnson have donated their time to Latrobe City’s various volunteering programs over a period of 10 years; Nancy Sewell who has been volunteering for 12 years; and finally, Val Vincent, Helen Bullen, and Cheryle Soppe who have been volunteering for 15 years.
"Latrobe City understands the importance of volunteering across the municipality. It provides such a wonderful experience for the people receiving assistance, and also for the volunteers who give up so much of their time to help others who are in a less fortunate position than themselves," Cr Price concluded.
