Active students rewarded in ‘Keep Fit, Don’t Sit’ awardsLatrobe’s highest achieving primary schools and students have been recognised in the 2005 ‘Keep Fit, Don’t Sit’ program awards, presented at the Latrobe City headquarters. By Latrobe City Council - 20th September 2005 - Back to News Sacred Heart Primary School was awarded first place in the overall schools’ challenge with the school’s students participating in an average of 1223 minutes physical activity over the two-week period. Grey Street Primary School and Lumen Christi Primary School were recognised for achieving the next two highest average times.
In the individual student’s challenge, Jessica Bodinnar from Grey Street Primary School tallied an impressive 2995 minutes of activity time winning her first place. Asije Beluli brought home second place to Morwell Park Primary School, and Lumen Christi Primary School’s Thomas D'Alia came in third.
Latrobe City Deputy Mayor, Cr Darrell White, said the ‘Keep Fit, Don’t Sit’ program is designed to educate students about the benefits of regular physical activity and help them become interested and motivated in staying active in order to experience a better quality of life.
"The ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program involved visits to grade 3 and 4 students at the 14 primary schools registered for the 2005 program. The visits were
conducted by Vashon Weaver, Latrobe City Pacers’ player, assisted by other Pacers’ players," Cr White explained.
"The program focused on helping children remain active and healthy, through physical education and listening programs, games and team building activities. Participating students were given tally sheets to record the amount of physical activity and exercise they participated in over a two-week period.
"Latrobe City Council is very pleased to have supported the 'Keep Fit Don't Sit' program and looks forward to improving on this year’s efforts and making next year’s program even bigger and better," Cr White said.
"Encouraging physical activity in our schoolchildren provides significant benefits for our community in years to come. A healthier adult community will be one that will enjoy a vastly enhanced lifestyle," Cr White said.
Prizes of vouchers for Karl’s Mega Sports store were awarded to the schools and the individual students with the highest average exercise time.
The ‘Keep Fit Don’t Sit’ program is supported by International Power Hazelwood, Latrobe City, Latrobe City Pacers, and GippSport.
"Our thanks must particularly go to Vashon Weaver of the Latrobe City Pacers, whose help ensured the success of this great project," Cr White added.
