35% decrease in Latrobe’s waste to landfill

Latrobe City residents have shown their enthusiastic support for the three bin recycling and waste collection service, with a 35% decrease in waste going to landfill in the 2004/2005 financial year to date.

This means around 630 tonnes less material is being sent to landfill each month compared to the same time last year.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, congratulated residents for embracing the service, introduced in July last year. "This is good news for Latrobe and for the environment. It will help Latrobe meet challenging new targets that have been set by the State Government to reduce material being sent to landfill," Councillor Lougheed said.

Current figures show that the breakup of waste collected by the kerbside collection in Latrobe is recycling 25%, green waste 34% and garbage 41%.

Out of the total waste stream, 59% of waste is being diverted from landfill for processing as recyclables.

Waste Education Officer, Peter Collins said there were still some problems with contamination, especially with plastic bags and garbage going into green waste bins and items such as car parts, pots and pans and other scrap metal going into recycling bins.

"The more we do to minimise contamination in our recycling and green waste, the more efficiently we can process material and keep these valuable resources out of the landfill where they are lost forever," Mr Collins said.

"Residents who are still not clear on exactly what to put in their recycling and green waste bins should refer to the information booklet supplied with the new bins. If people have lost or thrown out their booklet or fridge magnet and require a new one, they can contact Citizen Services on 1300 367 700.

"Residents can also ask for a copy of ‘Your A-Z Guide of Garbage and Recycling’, a comprehensive guide to what can and cannot be recycled in Latrobe to be sent to their home," Mr Collins added.
