Orchestra Victoria to romance LatrobeOrchestra Victoria will perform a selection of the best romantic orchestral music with brilliant young violinist, Sally Cooper, at the free concert being presented by Latrobe City at Kernot Hall on Friday 17 October By Latrobe City Council - 7th October 2003 - Back to News Peter Garnick, Managing Director Orchestra Victoria, said the concert will feature the works of Ravel, Faure, de Falla and Saint-Saens.
"It includes some of the best-known works of the romantic era; Ravel and Faure’s haunting Pavane’s and Bartok’s fiery Rumanian Dances for Orchestra. It’s sumptuous dance music that will delight the audience," Mr Garnick said.
Latrobe City’s Manager Arts, Paul Holton, said that the Latrobe City Youth Band will perform a curtain raiser and showcase local young talent. "The Youth Band will also will also perform during the supper," Mr Holton said.
"Australian born Benjamin Northey will conduct the concert. He has established himself as a leading young conductor both in Australia and internationally.
"In 2002 Northey was accepted from an international field as the highest-ranked applicant to the renowned Sibelius Academy conducting course in Helsinki, Finland where he is currently based. In 2003 he was awarded the Brian Stacey Memorial Prize for emerging Australian conductors."
The program includes Falla El Amor Brujo (excerpts); St Saens Introduction & Rondo; Ravel Pavane; Bartok Rumanian Dances; Sarasate Gypsy Airs; and Piazzolla Libertango.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said Orchestra Victoria enriches the cultural lives of more than 250,000 Victorians each year, through a wide range of performances and education programs.
"Council is proud to be sponsoring the two free concerts in Latrobe which are also supported through philanthropic grants, Arts Victoria and the Australia Council," Cr Middlemiss explained.
At the end of the concert in Morwell, ‘Events Latrobe’ will host a free supper for the audience. "This will also provide a wonderful opportunity for the community to meet members from the orchestra," Cr Middlemiss said.
"We hope the community will take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful musical experience at Kernot Hall, or join us on Thursday 16 October for a free Chamber Concert at 2pm at the Moe Town Hall," Cr Middlemiss added.
