Path on its way to completionBass Coast residents and visitors can now walk, run or cycle all the way from Wonthaggi to Cowes with construction on the final section of the Anderson to San Remo shared path well underway. By Portal Admin - 3rd November 2016 - Back to News The final stage between Potters Hill Road and Panorama Drive, approximately 1.2km of shared path, is progressing well and provides the remaining link between the existing path network in San Remo and the bus interchange at Anderson.
The path allows cyclists, as well as those on foot, to travel safely along a continuous path from the main street of San Remo along the coastline to Anderson, and beyond.
The pathway is now open for the public with the remaining service road works in San Remo to be completed by December 2016, weather permitting.
Bass Coast Shire Council appointed SR Excavations Pty Ltd to carry out the works as part of Council’s adopted Capital Works program for 2016-17.
The project involves the construction of a 600m long concrete shared pathway, and the construction of a temporary 370m long gravel pathway within vacant land prior to start of the residential properties along Phillip Island Road.
"Council, developers and landowners have been working together to ensure the path alignment will meet future demands," Council’s General Manager Infrastructure, Felicity Sist, said.
"The purpose of constructing a temporary gravel path is to allow for level or alignment changes that may be required as a result of future development proposals," Ms Sist said.
The project also includes the creation of a shared zone for pedestrians and vehicles along the service road, with appropriate roadworks, linemarking, traffic calming devices, signages and path connections to be installed to define the shared zone space.
"We appreciate that these works may present an inconvenience and we ask for your patience during these times," Ms Sist said.
"Vehicles movements on Phillip island Road and the service road may be restricted at times due to the nature of these works, but our contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions
to motorists, residents and local businesses."
The existing Bass Coast Rail Trail, in addition to this path, will provide users with some of the most scenic views and points of interest within Victoria.
Ms Sist said Council has also provided viewing platforms that will allow users the opportunity to stop and take in the scenery.
"We are confident that the route will attract many visitors and allow those people interested in commuting by bicycle between our towns a safe option," Ms Sist said.
"Walking groups will be able to complete a loop using the George Bass Trail, connecting in Kilcunda and San Remo. For the thousands of tourists who travel to the popular holiday hotspots, it
provides an additional healthy activity with a safe, fun option to enjoy the beautiful coastline."
With the number of people taking up cycling and walking increasing, the new shared path link will allow those in Cowes to ultimately ride or walk to Wonthaggi for the entire distance completely off-road.
The separation of cyclists from the busy road has been an important factor driving the project from its inception as it improves safety for all road users.
Providing facilities to encourage people to walk or cycle on a regular basis is consistent with Council’s Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan,Bass Coast Aspirational Network Pathways Plan 2016, San Remo Access Strategy, VicRoads Principal Bicycle Network and Strategy Cycling Corridors.
