Youth Leadership participants graduate

Latrobe City’s Youth Leadership participants have come to the end of their year-long program and recently attended a graduation ceremony at the corporate headquarters.

By Latrobe City Council - 12th July 2006 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, councillor Lisa Price said that the participants had been selected from across the municipality and had undergone intensive training on a number of subjects.

"The participants completed a 12 month program comprising of regular meetings, a community project and finally a two-day camp at Delhuntie Park in Trafalgar.

"The participants were given training in public speaking, debating, team building and community volunteering. They also attended the National Young Leaders Day in Melbourne and the Steps to the Future conference in Sale," Cr Price explained.

Latrobe City’s youth services program officer, Nicole Carder, said that one component of the program involved completing a community project.

"The group visited the Carinya Early Learning Centre in Morwell and played with the children. Along with decorating biscuits, they read stories and played outside. Prior to leaving, the group presented the staff and children of Carinya with a box of resources and books," Ms Carder said.

"The final activity of the program was a two-day camp at Delhuntie Park. The young people were challenged both physically and mentally. The camp really gave them the opportunity to utilise the skills they had developed throughout the program as well as further cementing the friendships that had been formed during their year together," Ms Carder added.

To recognise the achievement of the participants, a graduation ceremony was officiated by council’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley and the mayor, councillor Lisa Price.

Cr Price said that the young people gave an informative presentation about the journey they have been on and what they have gained from the experience.

"It was interesting to hear from the perspective of these young people about their insight into the leadership program and its impact on their development and skills. These are the leaders of the future and they should now be equipped to use their new skills in the community," Cr Price concluded.
