New School Crossing

East Gippsland Shire Council has responded to the demand of increased community road safety in Swifts Creek by introducing a new school crossing.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 1st June 2004 - Back to News

A supervised school crossing on the Great Alpine Road in the Swifts Creek township commenced operation at the start of the current school term.

"The previously unsupervised crossing is now supervised as a result of concern expressed within the Swifts Creek community over the safety of school children using the crossing, whilst post bushfire timber salvage operation is underway," said Shire Chief Executive Officer, Steve Kozlowski.

"The increase in heavy vehicle traffic associated with the timber salvage was causing concern and as a result the Shire appointed a supervisor from within the Swifts Creek community.

"The funding for the supervisor is a joint contribution being met by the community minded Tambo Timber Industry Group, East Gippsland Shire Council and VicRoads.

"All drivers are asked to pay attention when approaching a school children’s crossing and they must drive at a speed at which the driver can, if necessary, stop safely before the crossing," Steve said.
