The Floating World brings together a selection of Asian ceramics, scrolls and ukiyo-e prints from the Allan Aldous Collection, donated to Latrobe Regional Gallery in 2000. The donation forms the basis of the Gallery’s permanent collection of Asian Art, which includes objects from 17th Century Persian miniatures, 19th Century Chinese scrolls and ceramics to a significant number of Japanese woodblock prints.

Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Dr Mark Themann, said that the exhibition presents a selection of works from this collection, which largely references artistic expressions that emerged during the Edo period in Japan (1600-1868).

"The culture of this era prized a wide diversity of cultural pursuits, including Kabuki theatre, Geisha arts, Sumo wrestling, as well as literature and the visual arts. In this spirit, this exhibition displays delicately beautiful Chinese ceramics, including works from the Song and Ming Dynasties.

"The term ukiyo-e was originally an ironic play on the Buddhist term 'ukiyo' meaning 'sorrowful world'. During the Edo period, the meaning of this term transformed into 'pictures of the floating world'. It was an appropriate phrase for an aesthetic that was based on the vibrant and showy culture of the era. Creating ukiyo-e prints was often seen as a way of escaping internal constraints and expressing one’s self," Dr Themann said.

Curated by in-house associate curator Tracey Miller-Armstrong, "The Floating World presents delicate and intricate insights into Japanese printmaking and Chinese ceramics. Latrobe Regional Gallery is thrilled to present this magnificent selection of works, a major strength within the LRG collection," Dr Themann concluded.

The Floating World from the Allan Aldous Collection will be on display until 18 September 2016.

A free public talk by senior curator Shelley McDermott will be held on 18th of August at 5.00 pm.
