Autumn Watching Easy On The Eyes And Feet In Victory Park

Cooler days are certainly changing the colour of the landscape in many areas of Latrobe City; not only as verges and open space take on a green hue as grass sprouts, but as numerous ornamental trees begin to show their colourful autumn tonings.

By Latrobe City Council - 24th April 2009 - Back to News

Plantings of golden ash have turned to vibrant yellow, while pin oaks, red oaks and ornamental pears are taking on their hues of copper and red. Dawn redwoods will soon be tinged with dusky pinks, and liquidambers will exhibit their rich plum and purple tonings.

While many streetscapes offer a show of glorious colour, perhaps the best displays are to be enjoyed in council’s parks and gardens such as in Victory Park in Traralgon.

For observers of autumn tonings in Victory Park this year, the experience is not just easy on the eye, but thanks to a resurfacing of many of the shared paths through the gardens last week, will be easy on the feet.

Latrobe City councillor, Cr Rohan Fitzgerald, said the works were carried out as a part of Latrobe City Council’s $90,000 annual bicycle path asphalt overlay program.

"Victory Park is Traralgon’s premier parkland space where numerous people walk for pleasure, picnic, attend events such as Carols by Candlelight held at the soundshell, or access Newman Park and its renowned all abilities playground.

"The paths also provide pleasant access to the central business district of Traralgon, the senior citizens club, and public transport.

"Many people will immediately notice the benefit of the resurfacing, particularly mums with prams and those who cycle or walk the shared path that provides access to Bert Thompson Reserve and beyond to sporting facilities in Harold Preston Park and Agnes Brereton," Cr Fitzgerald said.

Latrobe City’s coordinator infrastructure management, Richard Brammall, said paths such as those in Victory Park are inspected every three years to assess their condition. In addition, footpath safety inspections are carried out on a one, two or three year cycle depending on the level of pedestrian usage to identify any hazards.

"Council’s asset management system identified that the paths in Victory Park were deteriorating with age and with the ingress of tree roots from the park’s many significant trees.

"Work on the paths was undertaken in two stages, first with a regulation layer of hot mix asphalt to remove all the bumps from tree roots and provide cross fall on the footpaths for drainage. Finally the paths were overlaid with a stone mastic asphalt wearing course to provide a skid resistant finish," Mr Brammall said.

Downer EDI Works undertook the resurfacing work for Latrobe City.
