Council Will Meet Monthly And Expand Community Consultation

At their meeting last night East Gippsland Shire Councillors voted to hold regular Council Meetings once a month and significantly expand the community consultation program.

Under the new program one Council Meeting will be to be held on the first Tuesday in each month starting at 5.00 pm in the Corporate Centre, Bairnsdale.

Exceptions will be April for Easter, November for the Melbourne Cup and December for Christmas and in those months the Meeting will be held on the second Tuesday.

The Council Meeting agenda will be available from 4.00 p.m. on the Friday afternoon before the meeting by visiting any Council Business Centre, Library or Outreach Centre, and by accessing the Council’s web site.

Community Consultations will be held on the third Tuesday in each month (except April and December) and additionally one on the fifth Tuesday in August. They are also to be conducted in remote areas in March and October.

Shire CEO Steve Kozlowski said that Councillors were keen for an enhanced consultation program with communities, particularly those in Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Paynesville, Bruthen/Nowa Nowa, Buchan/Orbost, Omeo and Metung/Twin Rivers.

"In recent discussions, Councillors have given high priority to better scheduling of key matters for Council decisions, the introduction of additional consultation sessions; and retention of the successful Planning Consultation Meeting/Public Briefing sessions," he said.

The schedule for Regular Council meetings with be: 7 February, 11 April, 2 May; 6 June, 11 July, 1 August, 5 September, 3 October, 14 November and 12 December.

Community Consultations will be: Lakes Entrance and area, 21 February and 15 August; Bruthen/Nowa Nowa, 21 March; Buchan/Orbost, 4 April and 19 September; Paynesville and area; 16 May and 17 October; Omeo and area; 20 June and 27 November; Bairnsdale and area; 18 July.

Community consultations will also be held in the Shire’s remote areas at the end of March and October including Bemm River, Cann River, Bendoc/Tubbut, Bonang and surrounding areas.
