Inaugural literary festival a successThe first Latrobe City Literary Festival, held at the Traralgon Library last Sunday, 29th of May, was a huge success. Read more about it. By news@gippsland - 8th June 2016 - Back to News The first Latrobe City Literary Festival, held at the Traralgon library on Sunday 29 May, was a huge success with more than 50 people enjoying the event. But perhaps the real measure of success was revealing the number of Gippslanders, passionate about writing, who are looking to connect with each other.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said that the festival clearly highlighted the appetite for cultural activities in the region.
"With such a great response to this first festival we can see that the literary community in Latrobe City and beyond is thriving. We had participants from as far afield as Stratford and Bairnsdale.
"The morning workshop, delivered by Sofie Laguna, booked out in just a few days. Financial assistance from Writers Victoria and the Grace Marion Wilson Trust, through a grant provided to the Gippsland Writers Group, made the workshop possible.
"The afternoon author sessions featured readings from current works and ‘in conversation’ style talks by Sandi Wallace, Cath Crowley and Honey Brown. The audience asked questions throughout the afternoon and the feel of the event was friendly, informative and engaging," Cr Rossiter said.
"We’d like to thank the authors for their insightful presentations and for sharing their expert knowledge on aspects of their craft as well as the publishing industry. And we’d like to acknowledge the enthusiasm of the attendees which made the event so successful," Cr Rossiter said.
Latrobe City Council’s coordinator libraries, Deb Skinner said that the event was a great fit for the Traralgon library.
"It’s an accessible venue, with rooms that can cater for the workshop component and the author presentations. Of course, it’s also a very ‘writerly’ venue which served as a wonderful reminder to the participants of the power of words.
"We hope to grow the festival next year and the feedback forms provided us with various avenues to explore in terms of the type of workshop and the format of the event.
"The Gippsland Writers Group is actively looking to understand the writing landscape in Gippsland, in order to be the point of contact for Writers Victoria. For more information please email gippslandwritersgroup@gmail.com," Ms Skinner concluded.
