The Ecological Vegetation Class (EVC) mapping project commenced in 1995, led by John Davies, Senior Flora and Fauna Officer with the Department in Gippsland and involving a number of people from different organisations across the region.

The objectives of the mapping project were to produce maps at a scale of 1:25,000 showing the distribution of native vegetation on private and some public land in the region and to prepare a comprehensive report describing the Ecological Vegetation Classes of Gippsland.

Mr Davies said that the mapping is to be used as a tool for native vegetation management by a variety of government departments, agencies and authorities, local government, other organisations and community groups.

In launching the project, DSE Regional Manager, Tony Edgar said that it is important that the region has some valuable data on the native vegetation in the region.

"This is a significant event for a project that's been a long time in the making," Mr Edgar said.

"The information contained in this project is crucial to ensure that we understand what we're doing when we seek to change the landscape in any way."

"It will be a legacy for the people involved and the quality of the product is a great credit to them."

A total of 287 map sheets have been produced and entered into the DSE Corporate library. The maps are also available at Victorian Resources Online, via the DPI website www.dpi.vic.gov.au/vro
