From 3 pm, the park was full of people taking advantage of the entertainment provided by the Combined Churches group, making the most of the animal petting farm, face painting, go-karts and jumping castles.

Council’s Arts and Leisure Coordinator Jenny Church said Fiona Lyle and Barry Smith should be congratulated for putting together such a special event for the community.

"Over 30 community groups were involved in putting on the free activities," said Ms Churchill.

"Fiona and Barry did an incredible job coordinating it all.

Ms Churchill said the strong turn out was an indication of people’s support for the Games and the local community groups.

"We estimate that around 2,000 came down to Apex Park across the afternoon and evening.

"It was great to see so many families – extended families with grandparents, mum, dad and kids - all coming along.

Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games Gold and Silver medallist, Linda Ryan officially opened the celebrations.

While the youngster certainly made the most of the afternoon and early evening activities and entertainment, many older people arrived to watch the Opening Ceremony on the big screens.

At 9.30 pm, the crowd was treated to a fantastic fireworks display by Cowes company Crackerjack.
