Young women ‘Shaping the Future’Twelve young women from throughout Latrobe City recently celebrated International Women’s Day by participating in the ‘Young Women Shaping the Future’ summit held in Melbourne. By Latrobe City Council - 8th April 2004 - Back to News All of the young women had previously participated in local youth events organised by Latrobe’s Youth Services or had been Gippsland Vocational Training Unit students who had organised peer pressure and school holiday programs.
Youth Development Officer, Leanne Vella, attended the event with the local participants and said that the focus of the summit was to discuss important issues for young Australian women.
"One hundred and fifty young women from throughout Victoria attended the summit to discuss peer pressure, sexuality, domestic violence and the right of women to have their own opinions and ambitions.
"The main topic discussed at the summit was body image and how it is influenced by the media. All of the participants had strong opinions about this issue and they were all given the opportunity to voice their concerns," Ms Vella said.
The participants developed their ideas and opinions about young women’s issues by participating in activities such as brainstorming, script writing, designing advertisements and developing community celebration work plans.
The ideas and opinions expressed during the activities have also been sent to the State Government to be included in its inquiry into body image.
"The summit provided young Victorian women with a place where they could share their experiences, knowledge and ideas whilst also meeting other young women from throughout the state," Ms Vella said.
"All of the participants from Latrobe said that they left the summit with a greater understanding of self-expression and appreciating the opportunity to openly discuss issues close to their hearts," Ms Vella concluded.
