Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival acts announcedAnticipation in the build up to the Commonwealth Games is set to swell with Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Lisa Price, this week announcing a number of headline acts to feature at the Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival Live site on Friday 24 March. By Latrobe City - 6th February 2006 - Back to News At the Commonwealth Games Live Site in Gippsland, located at the Moe Racecourse, a fantastically colourful array of performances will be able to be enjoyed by audiences on Saturday 18, Friday 24, and Saturday 25 March 2006. Admission will be free.
"We have a big day, full of some great international acts, lined up for Friday – the first act is due to start on the main stage at 3pm and we don’t plan to stop partying until after 10:30pm!," Cr Price said.
"The line up includes the electrifying Kenyan group ‘AfroJambo’ and Melbourne’s own ‘Strange Fruit’, both well renowned world-class acts,"
"We can also announce that Icarus, one of Australia’s premier stilt-walking acts are set to feature as a roving performance during the day, and spectators can look forward to live performances by Ravibandu Vidyapathy from Sri Lanka, and Fijian sensations Black Rose who will definitely have the audience jumping with their ‘euro-dance meets pacific reggae’ style of music," Cr Price said.
‘Strange Fruit’ performs a breathtaking show above the heads of the audiences from the top of four metre high flexible poles; combining dance, circus, comedy and spectacle - something not to be missed.
They will be performing their show ‘Swoon!’ whilst at the Live Site, which has been described as a spectacular story of love, loss, joy and freedom up on high.
Over the past 11 years ‘Strange Fruit’ have achieved a reputation throughout the world for their unique performances, having performed at over 250 international festivals and events in more than 38 countries across Europe, Asia, North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, as well as Australasia.
They describe their show as a vital, spirited performance with spectacular image-making and seductive comedy. Accompanied by a unique and eclectic soundtrack blending some classics with original music, audiences will be taken on a journey of beauty, love and laughter.
Afro Jambo presents us with a five member acrobatic troupe from the streets of Nairobi, Kenya. The Afro Jambo acrobats will dazzle audiences with amazing displays of limbo dancing, fire-eating, human pyramids and difficult types of rope-skipping.
Afro Jambo’s name means ‘greetings from Africa’ and the light hearted, high energy troupe with its quirky sense of humour will surely make you feel welcome.
The performance times announced for Friday 24 March 2006 are:
Fraser Hooper – Afro Jambo/Strange Fruit from 3pm – 4:30pm, and again at 5:45pm – 7pm; Ravi Bandu Vidyapathy 4:30pm – 5:15pm; and Black Rose 9:30pm – 10:30pm. Icarus will provide roaming performances from 5pm – 5:45pm, and from 7pm – 7:45pm.
