Latrobe City launches the ‘Energy in Sport’ celebrationLatrobe City launched the summer carnival ‘Energy in Sport’ celebration at the Traralgon Tennis Complex on Thursday evening. By Latrobe City Council - 12th January 2006 - Back to News The ‘Energy in Sport’ celebration features a series of sporting events taking place throughout January, February and March 2006; and follows on from the success of the Latrobe Spring Racing Carnival – ‘The Power of Racing’.
First up in the celebration is the International Tennis Federation’s Junior Tennis Championships being held at the Traralgon Tennis Complex. The celebration concludes with the Commonwealth Games Gippsland Live Site celebrations taking place 15 – 26 March 2006.
In launching the celebration, Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said Latrobe City recognised the importance of large sporting events involving competitors from outside the region, as they are an excellent means of attracting visitors to regional areas.
"This ‘Energy in Sport’ celebration offers an exciting mix of sporting events that will certainly attract many competitors and visitors," Cr Price said.
"The program Includes the Latrobe City Classic Bowls Singles being held at the Yallourn Bowling Club, the Australian Masters Water Ski Tournament, the Eastern District Fire Brigade Championships and the State Target Archery Championships, just to name a few. All of those events will bring in visitors from far and wide.
"A range of incentives have also been provided to encourage people not only to come to Latrobe City, but also to stay over and see more of what Latrobe and its surrounds have to offer. This Celebration aims to create a festive atmosphere with lots of activities that will attract people to Latrobe City from across Gippsland and beyond.
"The incentives recognise that a unified, coordinated marketing approach, supported by tourism operators can result in successful individual events and ultimately significant economic benefits for the region," Cr Price said.
Latrobe City’s events coordinator, Meaghan Jewson, said the Latrobe City Men’s Classic Pair Lawn Bowls Tournament is recognised state-wide and is an integral part of the Victorian bowling calendar. This prestigious event will be held at the Moe Bowling club from the 23 – 25 January 2006.
"The next event is the two-day race meeting on 28 and 29 January to be held at the Moe Racecourse which will include the ‘Latrobe City Sprint’ and a display of horsepower with Ford and Holden cars and motor racing personalities," Ms Jewson said.
"Latrobe City is also hosting the Victorian Little Athletics Association State Multi Event Championships. To be held at the Joe Carmody Athletics track, Newborough. Some of Victoria’s finest young athletes will compete in this two-day competition taking place 11 and 12 February.
"On 28 February and 1 March, Latrobe City will experience the thrilling build up to the Commonwealth Games with the arrival of the Queens Baton at the Kay Street Gardens in Traralgon. There will be a cultural concert and an opportunity to see the Baton being carried through local communities as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay. It will also provide the opportunity for the community to meet sporting personalities. The Baton will leave Traralgon on 1 March and make its way through the streets of Morwell and Moe before its arrival at Apex Park, Moe.
"The final event in the celebration is the Commonwealth Games’ Gippsland Live Site, which will be a visual spectacle over twelve days from 15 – 26 March. A big screen will be showing all the action from the Games each day, and there will be local and international performers on stage with entertainment for all."
Cr Price said that after the success of the ‘Power of Racing’ carnival there had been enthusiastic support shown in the region for a summer sporting carnival to feature events in Latrobe.
"The ‘Energy in Sport’ celebration has the potential to attract huge numbers of visitors to the region; but we must all work together to maximise its effect, and extend a warm welcome to those who visit, so that they are encouraged to return," Cr Price said.
