It is the third stopover for the Sporting Hall of Fame and follows its display at Latrobe City’s Morwell and Traralgon service centres.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the Sporting Hall of Fame was established as part of Latrobe City’s Commonwealth Games celebrations.

"Latrobe City’s Sporting Hall of Fame is designed to recognise the great achievements of local sporting ‘Legends’ and ‘Members’ through photographs and articles depicting their feats.

"The ‘Legends’ category is for athletes, who achieved sporting excellence by competing at the highest level, succeeding at the national level and gaining selection to a national team, or excelling at the highest possible level for their chosen sport," Cr Price explained.

"The ‘Members’ category is designed to recognise the contributions of individuals who may not have actually competed, but have made a significant contribution to their chosen sport. This includes officials and referees, coaches and trainers, sports medicine or sports psychology, administrators and others involved in sport at the elite level."

The current Legends inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame are Andrew O’Sullivan – athletics, Una Holt – lawn bowls, Ted Kalkhoven - volleyball, Bernie Quinlan – Australian Rules football and Rocco ‘Rocky’ Mattioli - boxing.

The current Members inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame are Joe Carmody – athletics, Jeff Bond – sports psychology, Don Di Fabrizio – soccer, Vern Curnow – athletics and John Quinlivan – pistol shooting.

Cr Price said the Sporting Hall of Fame will continue to travel to venues across the municipality until nominations are called for towards the end of next year.

"Inductions will now take place every two years and this will become a wonderful ongoing opportunity to recognise the achievements of those who have achieved sporting excellence at the highest level," Cr Price said.

Latrobe City’s Sporting Hall of Fame can be viewed at the Moe Newborough Sports Centre during normal opening hours: 6am – 8:30pm Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 5:30pm on weekends, and 12 noon – 5:30pm on public holidays.

More information regarding the Hall of Fame can be found at the Latrobe City website http://www.latrobe.vic.gov.au/Events or by calling 1300 367 700.
