Latrobe to Receive Additional Police
More police resources will be dedicated to regional areas of Victoria including in Latrobe.
Member for Morwell Russell Northe has welcomed today’s announcement that more police resources will be dedicated to regional areas of Victoria including in Latrobe.
"80 new police officers have been earmarked for our region (Latrobe, Bass and Baw Baw) which is positive news, particularly given recent concerns expressed by our community on high crime rates in our area, and the necessity for more police to be allocated to our region to which I had raised in Parliament recently" Mr Northe said.
"Unfortunately, crime rates in Latrobe are the second highest in the State per capita, and as I had raised with Minister Neville, the allocation of police resources need to reflect same" said Mr Northe.
The announcement today included an additional 788 police and 25 Protective Service Officers (PSO’s) being deployed across the State from with many headed to regional areas.
"These extra resources in Latrobe will play a role in helping to make our communities safer, and provide police command with the ability to tackle hot spot issues and areas of crime," said Mr Northe.
Our local police do a wonderful job often in challenging circumstances and they also need to be supported and by ensuring they have manageable workloads is imperative in the retention and recruitment of high calibre police officers.
"The additional resources announced are a positive step in the right direction, notwithstanding that more can and needs to be done to reduce criminal activity in the region and ensure that appropriate penalties apply to perpetrators of crime to ensure community expectations are being met" Mr Northe said.
