Feedback Invited On Latrobe ‘Older Persons Strategy’

Latrobe City Council is inviting public feedback on a draft ‘Older Persons Strategy’.

By Latrobe City Shire Council - 12th April 2007 - Back to News

The draft strategy has been developed following extensive consultation with community organisations, government departments and older people themselves in order to help guide council and the community in responding to the challenge of an ageing population.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Tony Zimora, said council is meeting the challenge of an ageing population with the development of the strategy.

"The impact of an ageing population will be extensive in Latrobe City. Over the next 15 years Latrobe City will be home to twice as many people aged over sixty years of age as now. That’s approximately 12,000 more residents in that demographic age group than at present," Cr Zimora explained.

"This is the equivalent of planning for a new town or community and brings similar challenges in urban planning, building and maintaining appropriate infrastructure, creating employment and training opportunities, providing community and health services, and encouraging and providing for cultural, recreational and social activity needs.

"Council also expects that older people themselves will increasingly seek to express their needs and aspirations and seek an avenue to communicate with council. Council in turn has an obligation to actively engage with older people and provide opportunities for their views to be addressed in council planning and activities," Cr Zimora said.

"Importantly, we also need to ensure we build a community which respects, supports, and benefits older residents.

"The draft ‘Older Persons Strategy’ highlights the scale of social and economic change that will occur in Latrobe as the current baby-boomer generation reaches sixty years and older, along with the impact of increased life expectancy, improved health and mobility and increased needs for support for frailer aged people," Cr Zimora explained.

Latrobe City’s manager family services, David Welch, said the draft strategy also sets out a number of directions for future action.

"A number of key areas have emerged as a result of our consultations with older people and community groups. These include: respect and recognition of older people; housing; health; social support; urban and community planning; active living and community participation; social support services; transport; advocacy; and information and communication.

"The strategy highlights a number of ways that council in conjunction with community stakeholders might respond to these issues; and sets some overall directions to enable a more detailed action plan to be developed over the next year," Mr Welch said.

"We are now seeking comment from the community in relation to the draft strategy before it is presented to council for its consideration."

Copies of the draft strategy and feedback forms can be obtained from council service centres in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon; on the Latrobe City website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au; or by contacting Erlinda James at Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.

Feedback on the draft ‘Older Persons Strategy’ should be provided by Monday 30 April 2007.
