Council To Progress Gippsland Logistics Precinct

Latrobe City Council will move to the next stage in the proposed development of the Gippsland Logistics Precinct in Morwell following a recent resolution by council

By Latrobe City Council - 21st April 2009 - Back to News

The resolution paves the way for the implementation of the project plan which includes a governance model and the results of a study determining estimated rail freight tasks at the proposed logistics precinct.

Latrobe City councillor, Cr Graeme Middlemiss, said the study provided the means of demonstrating an indicative level of demand to potential operators and/or developers of the site in the future.

"Potential users were surveyed to establish likely use of the facility and if so, whether their likely take up of the opportunity would eventuate within two years of the precinct’s development, or during the medium or longer term.

"A number of companies estimated the likely volumes of freight they would process through the Gippsland Logistics Precinct, and these estimates indicate potential viability for the project," Cr Middlemiss said.

Cr Bruce Lougheed said that Latrobe City is also in the process of negotiating a lease for the Gippsland Intermodal Freight Terminal with V/Line, after receiving positive advice last year from Minister Kosky giving Latrobe City Council approval to commence negotiations.

"The leased land being negotiated along with adjacent council owned land is proposed to be developed into the Gippsland Logistics Precinct," Cr Lougheed explained.

"The council resolution now provides the go ahead to move towards implementation of an expression of interest process, seeking private sector interest in the development and ongoing operation of the terminal.

"Latrobe City Council’s role will be predominately to facilitate the development of the site by assisting to secure federal or state financial assistance and to protect the use of the site via a long term lease," Cr Lougheed said.
