Darren Chester warns Gippslanders to prepare for potential mass native bird deaths following H5 bird flu detectionDarren Chester is urging Gippslanders to prepare for potential native bird deaths after H5 bird flu was detected at Lakes Entrance, warning of significant wildlife impacts and calling for coordinated biosecurity measures. By news@gippsland - 17th August 2026 - Back to News Gippslanders need to be prepared for mass deaths of native birdlife following a confirmed case of H5 bird flu in East Gippsland, according to local MP Darren Chester. Mr Chester said a dead crested tern in Lakes Entrance had tested positive for the virus and authorities were expecting further cases.
Darren Chester urged backyard poultry owners to follow biosecurity advice, warning H5 bird flu could significantly impact Gippsland Lakes wildlife, particularly during spring breeding Bird flu threatens wildlifeMr Chester said, "This is obviously disturbing news for the Gippsland Lakes, which has large populations of a diverse range of birdlife. Many Gippslanders are passionate about our native birdlife, and it will be distressing if we see large numbers of casualties." "We need to hope for the best but prepare for the worst with this bird flu, which has been devastating in other parts of the world. At a practical level, I have written to the federal government and sought details on additional support for any clean-up efforts or additional costs to local councils," he said. As Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Mr Chester has received regular briefings from Commonwealth officials since the first positive case was detected more than six weeks ago. "The advice I have received is the Gippsland Lakes are habitat for large numbers of seabirds, shorebirds and waterbirds at higher risk from H5 bird flu, so spread of the virus through this area is likely to have significant impacts on wildlife, particularly during the spring breeding season," Mr Chester said. Biosecurity responseMr Chester also said, "The detection of H5 bird flu in Gippsland and across Australia is a serious biosecurity challenge that demands a coordinated, transparent and well-timed response. In Parliament this week, I acknowledged the work being done by our frontline workers to manage the risks and minimise the potential impact on our native birdlife and the agricultural sector." "It's important to note that Australians can continue to have confidence in our locally-grown chicken and egg products as there have been no detections in poultry. The Coalition will work constructively with the government, industry and experts to ensure everything is being done to protect Australian agriculture, our biodiversity and regional communities," Mr Chester said. Mr Chester has urged backyard chicken owners to follow the biosecurity advice and minimise contact between wild birds and their poultry. The public has been advised if they find sick or dead birds, do not touch them. Immediately keep people and pets away, note the location and details, and report the incident to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888. Pictures from Darren Chester MP website.
