Work Started on Regional Pool UpgradeWork has started on the $6.9 million upgrade of the Lex Glover Regional Aquatic Centre in Sale. By Wellington Shire Council - 28th April 2006 - Back to News
"This is terrific news for residents of the Wellington Shire," said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.
"The aquatic centre gets very heavy usage with users from across the Shire and Gippsland but has not had a major upgrade in 34 years. This work will greatly modernise the indoor pool and provide several new facilities for our community," said Cr Hole.
The upgrade will include:
- Development of a new learn to swim area
- Improved access better suited for families and people with a disability
- New entry/counter area
- New toilets, showers and change facilities
- Hydrotherapy pool
- Safe ‘beach entry’ toddlers pool
- Improved gym and fitness facilities
- Crèche
"This facility will go well beyond the old concept of a swimming pool and will be a genuine health and fitness centre well suited to all age groups and abilities," said Cr Hole.
"It had been recognised that the existing indoor facilities were not suitable for the very young or older residents, who form a significant proportion of the Wellington community," said Cr Hole.
The upgrade will be substantially funded by Council supported by a State government grant of $2.5 million. A community fundraising committee has also been established to assist organisations, businesses or individuals who may wish to contribute to this community facility.
"We are particularly pleased that the facility will be more environmentally friendly and Council has received an additional $100,000 grant to part cover the cost of high level active solar technology and energy efficient passive design components," said Cr Hole.
The new plans were developed after lengthy consultation with the community, user groups and health and fitness professionals. The input from these groups was crucial in determining which new facilities were required and in designing easy access and movement around the complex.
"It was clear that users wanted improved facilities as well as a more inviting atmosphere. We believe we will achieve this, which is also important in encouraging new users to the facility, said Cr Hole.
The redevelopment is being undertaken by Gippsland firm Kirway Constructions. The new facilities are scheduled to be fully operational within 12 months.
The new indoor facilities will complement the existing outdoor complex.
"The regional facility will provide year round aquatic opportunities for the Wellington community.
"Council has made a strong commitment through its aquatic strategy to ensure that summer season swimming facilities in Maffra, Yarram, Stratford, Heyfield and Rosedale will continue to be provided for the long term. Council has been working on a program to upgrade all these facilities over time," said Cr Hole.
Wellington Shire Council encourages everyone to be involved in some form of leisure activity that they enjoy. Council promotes the development of a healthy community and accessible facilities where people can enjoy a rewarding lifestyle.
"I encourage all residents to be active and try any of Council’s facilities," said Cr Hole.
