Volunteers thanked for a great year’s workLatrobe City volunteers were thanked for their efforts at an end of year party held at Kernot Hall, Morwell last week. By Latrobe City Council - 5th December 2003 - Back to News Latrobe’s Volunteer Training and Events Officer, Wendy Hansen, said that almost 400 volunteers and clients attended the concert which starred Dennis Coard, a popular performer from the television program ‘Home and Away’.
"Volunteers from Meals on Wheels, ADASS, We Care and the Latrobe Community Transport programs, along with some aged and disability clients attended the party. After the show, there was a Christmas afternoon tea, with mince pies and shortbread. It was a great opportunity for the staff to relax, enjoy an afternoon’s entertainment and share in the congratulations for their work over the past year," Ms Hansen said.
"Dennis Coard gave a fantastic performance in his one-man show ‘The Fall of the Roman Umpire’, chronicling his early life in Ireland, his migration to Australia and his late arrival on the acting circuit. It was a very funny, touching show that captured the audience’s imagination," Ms Hansen explained.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that it was important to recognise the hard work of the volunteers.
"As we approach the end of another year, with Christmas nearly upon us, it is a fitting time to offer our thanks to these people and commend them for their selfless, hard work during 2003. These workers give their time freely to help others in the community. The concert and afternoon tea is just a small token of our appreciation for their invaluable help," Cr Middlemiss said.
Latrobe’s General Manager, City Services, Greg Phillips who addressed the volunteers, highlighted the enormous contribution the volunteers made each year.
"It is important that Council acknowledges not only the hard work of the volunteers but also the vast number of unpaid hours that the volunteers contribute each year. The financial burden to Latrobe City Council and residents would be astronomical if all volunteers were on the payroll. These people are a priceless resource who should be very proud of their contribution to the community," Mr Phillips concluded.
