Yinnar Recreation Reserve to get major upgradeExtensions to the Yinnar Recreation Reserve pavilion and upgrades to the existing tennis court and netball court facilities will soon be underway By Latrobe City Council - 14th June 2001 - Back to News Extensions to the Yinnar Recreation Reserve pavilion and upgrades to the existing tennis court and netball court facilities will soon be underway following the announcement of a $49,370 Sport and Recreation Victoria Minor Facilities Program grant, by the Minister for Agriculture and Aboriginal Affairs, Keith Hamilton, last Friday.
Mr Hamilton said the upgrade of the facilities would at last provide a base for junior and senior netball and tennis teams which would enable the sports to reach their potential in Yinnar, and provide the facilities needed to attract higher competition matches and games.
President of the Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee, Peter Quigley, said the funding would be used to resurface and re-fence the tennis and netball courts, and provide floodlighting to the courts.
"The major project to be undertaken is an extension to the pavilion. The present temporary structure for the netball and tennis player clubrooms, is just that, a temporary arrangement. It is really quite unsuitable, lacking adequate space and facilities. There are no change rooms, showers or support functions, in fact junior players have to get changed in cars or any other place that offers some privacy or protection, and of course, at the end of a game, there are no shower facilities," Mr Quigley said.
"A new multi-purpose room will be added to the pavilion, which will provide a base for families of senior players participating in tennis, netball and football, as well as a meeting facility and a base for tennis and netball operations. Incorporated in the design is a change room, shower, disabled toilet, kitchen and store room," Mr Quigley said.
"While this grant will go a lot of the way towards providing for the $75,000 cost of the upgrade, there will still need to be a significant amount raised through the efforts of the Committee and the Yinnar community. We are fortunate that this community is really good at pitching in when there is work to be done and money to be raised, because without their support a project like this would not be possible," Mr Quigley added.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, congratulated the Committee of Management on their successful grant application, saying the Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management had consulted extensively with the Yinnar community of the type of facilities that were most needed by the community to serve its recreation and sporting needs.
"This consultation has resulted in this project being considered a high priority and the development of this community asset will benefit the local and wider community for many years," Cr Jenkins said.
"The Yinnar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management has also been successful in receiving Latrobe City Council funding, with a community grant to roof the existing toilet facility; and the Committee has recently completed the installation of spectator seating in the Reserve, which was also funded through a Council grant. The Recreation Reserve Committee of Management also contributed some funding to enable completion of both projects.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, added that the sporting and recreational facilities being provided, serviced not just the Yinnar community, but the surrounding districts of Driffield, Jeeralang, Jumbuk and Yinnar South.
"The Yinnar community has a reputation for helping itself and for generating significant community involvement in local activities. This is yet another example of its ability to get things done," Cr Hanning said.
