More volunteers needed for Meals on Wheels

Latrobe City is currently seeking more volunteers for its Meals on Wheels program

By Latrobe City Council - 18th December 2001 - Back to News

Latrobe City is currently seeking more volunteers for its Meals on Wheels program in Traralgon and Morwell.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said that the Meals on Wheels programs in Traralgon and Morwell was growing considerably and more help was urgently needed to provide the service.

"There is always a need for more volunteers but there is a pressing need for more assistance, particularly in Traralgon at the moment, where of the one hundred and fifty volunteers, twelve have recently retired. These are people who have dedicated an enormous amount of their time for the benefit of others, but like all people who give, give and give, there comes a time when they feel obliged to provide more attention to their nearest and dearest, and find their spare time is more restricted. To those who are retiring we offer our utmost thanks for the magnificent job they have done," Cr Jenkins said.

"Meals on Wheels provides tremendous support for aged and less mobile people in our community, by allowing them to live independently. They can rely on being able to access a nourishing hot meal each day, delivered by a team of volunteers. It’s extremely important that we’re able to continue with this vital support.

"Many citizens in the community benefit from receiving the nourishing meals delivered by our volunteers. While the meals themselves are subsidised by Council and the State Government, and the preparation is under Council contract, Latrobe and all municipalities depend on the good will of people in the community to deliver the meals to homes throughout Latrobe," Cr Jenkins said.

"In particular we are seeking retirees who find themselves with additional free time, some of which they are prepared to give for the benefit of others; not just for the Meals on Wheels program, but also for our We Care and Adult Day Activity Support Service (ADASS) programs.

"Delivering Meals on Wheels can be as simple as just dedicating an hour or so once a month or fortnight on a regular basis. Some volunteers accept a role as an on-call emergency, filling in for others who are on holiday or sick. All make a huge difference to the quality of life of other people.

"Our volunteers do a terrific job and meet lots of friends through the work they are doing. A contribution is made towards petrol, so the key essence volunteers are giving is their time.

"If you have an hour to spare one day a week, on a fortnightly or monthly basis, the Meals on Wheels delivery service, would really appreciate your assistance, or if you can spare a little more of your time, the We Care and ADASS programs would welcome your help," Cr Jenkins said.

"It is fitting that we conclude the International Year of Volunteers with a very big thank-you to the thousands of volunteers across Latrobe who dedicate their time and energy to the youth, the aged, the disadvantaged and those in need of care and assistance; either as individuals or as part of a community group. On behalf of my fellow Councillors and the Latrobe community at large, our heartfelt thanks for a job well done," Cr Jenkins concluded.
