Tourism infrastructure investment must be improved: Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, said today that on his re-election, a priority of the next term would be government investment and the development of tourism infrastructure and opportunities across the region.

"A real focus for our region must be gaining maximum value from our spectacular natural tourism assets.

"The Gippsland Lakes and river systems, our forests, the High Country, Snowy River country and Croajingalong National Park are just some of these assets," Mr Ingram said.

"This must include investment in infrastructure and the development of more quality tourism products to encourage visitors and gain value from our visitors."

Mr Ingram has proposed the following projects to boost tourism infrastructure in the region’s national parks:

  • An adventure drive to link the Snowy Region and celebrate the heritage and history of the legendary Man from Snowy River;
  • Funding and development of an icon walks project linking communities with quality walking opportunities in the regions national parks; and
  • Blue water ocean access at Mallacoota.

"All of these projects are a must for the development of tourism in the region," Mr Ingram said.

"I also propose further expansion of wilderness accommodation on both public and private land, such as the new Parks Victoria concepts being developed at Cape Conran and Buchan.

"The potential to develop an adventure drive to trace the legend of the Man from Snowy River linking towns in the Omeo region with Corryong to the north, and the Upper Snowy towns of Thredbo, Jindabyne, Dalgety and East Gippsland’s real Snowy country to Marlo has real opportunities. The drive travels some of the most spectacular and scenic roads in the south-east Australia.

"Tourism offers real growth potential to this region. Historic underinvestment and underachievement has severely hampered the region’s tourism industry.

"A priority of my next term is to continue working with local communities and councils, government departments, tourism bodies, industry and the State Government to create better value from the tourism industry," Mr Ingram concluded.
