South Gippsland Shire Council announcements on community grants including updates on Christmas tree and Ambassador program
In The Know is your fortnightly reminder of what council is up to at the moment. Have a look at what is going on and how you can get involved!
With Community Grants for 2022/23 opening on 1 January, our Community Strengthening team is hitting the road to provide advice to the community. From December to March, drop-in sessions will be held across the Shire where community organisations and individuals alike can come along and ask any questions they might have.
The Community Grants Program aims to support community initiatives that enhances the quality of life, and opportunities for South Gippsland residents
Drop - in sessions
Drop-in sessions will be held at the locations below between 10.00am and 3.00pm:
- Monday 12 December - Leongatha Community House
- Wednesday 14 December - Mirboo North Grainstore
- Monday 9 January - Sandy Point Community Centre
- Wednesday 11 January - Venus Bay Community Centre
- Monday 23 January - Meeniyan Hall
- Wednesday 25 January - Nyora Public Hall
- Monday 6 February - Korumburra - Milpara House
- Wednesday 8 February - Poowong Uniting Church
- Monday 20 February - Toora Hall
- Wednesday 22 February - Foster - Manna Gum Community House

Community leadership program
Are you looking to extend your leadership skills but not sure where to start? The Community Leadership Program may just be the perfect program for you to build your leadership capacity! The program consists of ten core learning topics covering:
- Project planning
- Teamwork
- Values
- Strategic leadership
- Public engagement
- Emotional intelligence
- Culture
- Networking
- Board and Committee Governance
- Local Government 101/Getting to Know South Gippsland
Starting in March next year, it will be delivered outside of business hours and hosted across the Shire. No fees will be charged, with all costs being covered by council.
Sound like something you would be interested in? Applications are open now until 30 December with selection to take place by February. For more information and to apply, please visit South Gippsland Shire Community Leadership Program website.
Anyone over the age of 18 that is interested in developing or enhancing their leadership skills are encouraged to send an application
Foster structure plan
South Gippsland Shire Council is seeking public comment on the recently endorsed Foster Structure Plan Discussion Paper. The Discussion Paper has been designed to give the community information about the current state of play and some prompting questions for the future of Foster. Foster residents are encouraged to come along to the drop-in session:
- Sunday 11 December - 9.00am to 11.00am
- Prom Produce and Craft Market (Foster Showgrounds)
There is also the option of completing an online survey, uploading a written submission, or participating in an online discussion board by visiting Foster Structure Plan website. Once feedback closes on Friday 23 December 2022, council will work to develop a Draft Structure Plan that will be released for final public comment in 2023.
Ambassador program
Would you like to be an Ambassador for South Gippsland? South Gippsland Shire Council is encouraging interested business owners and residents to complete a free online course to help improve the South Gippsland visitor experience.
This course aims to create local tourism ambassadors to provide visitors to South Gippsland with valuable information about local attractions, towns and activities. Participants will learn about local events, produce, walking and cycling experiences and more.
Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate and become a South Gippsland Tourism Ambassador. To find out more about the Program or to sign up, please visit My South Gippsland website.

Get your donations in!
Our councillors were getting into the Christmas spirit last week, donating non-perishable food and gifts under the Christmas tree in council's reception. We have had overwhelming support for the Christmas Food and Gift Drive from our community so far, which we are extremely grateful for.
If you would like to donate, there is still time. Donations will be accepted up to midday Wednesday 7 December and need to be dropped off at council's reception: 9 Smith Street Leongatha.

Green waste amnesty
Our annual Green Waste Amnesty is still open and running until 31 December 2022. This is a great opportunity to get rid of your green waste at any of council's transfer stations.
It is held every year to encourage you to prepare your property for the fire season by removing potential fire hazards. To see what plant species are not accepted as green waste and more information on the amnesty, please visit Green Waste Amnesty Period website.
Community RAT program
Free Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) are now available for priority and high-risk community members to collect at the following locations:
- South Gippsland Shire Council Reception - 9 Smith St, Leongatha
- Foster Library - 9 Main St, Foster
- Poowong Library - 18 Ranceby Rd, Poowong
- Mirboo North Library - 2 Brennan St, Mirboo North
- Korumburra Library - 165 Commercial St, Korumburra
- Leongatha Library - 2 Smith St, Leongatha
If you have symptoms or have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19, please do not collect RATs until you are well. If you can't get to a location, a guardian or carer can collect your free RATs for you. For more information, visit the Community RAT Program website.
Council meeting 477
The council meeting is live streamed through a YouTube streaming service which automatically selects the appropriate quality level based on your internet speed and quality. This setting can be manually overridden by accessing the 'settings cog' in the bottom right hand corner. Council is not responsible for these types of technical issues as they are beyond its control.

Council is seeking submissions from qualified companies/applicants for the following:
- RFT/344 - Simons Lane; Road Reconstruction.
- RFT/346 - Mirboo North Swimming Pool Car Park Extension.
- RFT/348 - Sealed Roads Rehab
- RFT/343 -Retaining Wall Construction; Mirboo North Transfer Station
All tenders close at 2.00pm. RFT/346 and RFT/344 close Tuesday 13 December, RFT/348 closes Thursday 15 December and RFT/343 closes Tuesday 31 January 2023. Documentation is available from council's e-Tendering Portal.
