New Tourist Precint For Omeo

East Gippsland Shire Council expects to start work around mid-year on the Omeo Bus and Tourist Precinct and have the work completed by the start of next summer.

The area will provide parking for buses and cars and allow large vehicles to turn in the street from both directions.

The project will cost $251,514 of which grant of $166,500 has been provided from a Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (Small Towns Development Fund), and the balance of $85,014 is from the Shire’s Council’s Urban Design Framework budget.

The project was identified as a high priority in the 2005 Great Alpine Road Urban Design Framework.

The development will link the Livingstone Creek Park area, permitting buses to centrally park so that visitors can access nearby shopping areas, visitor information centre and Livingstone Park.

Components in the development include bus and car parking, a lookout and viewing area, footpaths, information and interpretive signage, outdoor furniture including seating and tables as well as drainage and lighting.

CEO Steve Kozlowski said not only would the development provide a much-needed area for buses to turn and park, but its position on the western entry will also provide the town with a much more visually pleasing entry point.

"Much of the development will be constructed from locally sourced rock that will be used to build a stone wall around the perimeter of the parking and viewing area," he said.

"The project is important and are planning on it being completed for the Melbourne Cup weekend in November."
